Common questions
What is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?
Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep-related breathing disorder in which the upper airway repeatedly narrows or collapses during sleep. This can cause snoring, pauses in breathing, drops in oxygen levels, fragmented sleep, morning headaches, daytime fatigue, and poor concentration.
How does a mandibular advancement device (MAD) treat sleep apnea?
A mandibular advancement device is a custom oral appliance worn during sleep. It gently holds the lower jaw in a forward position, which can help keep the airway more open and reduce snoring and obstructive breathing events.
Who is a good candidate for MAD therapy?
MAD therapy is commonly considered for adults with primary snoring, mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or patients who cannot tolerate CPAP or prefer an alternative treatment. A proper sleep diagnosis and dental evaluation are important before starting treatment.
Is MAD therapy as effective as CPAP?
CPAP is effective at controlling obstructive sleep apnea when it is used consistently, but treatment effectiveness also depends on whether a patient can comfortably use the therapy every night. Custom, titratable mandibular advancement devices are an established, guideline-supported treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, not simply an anti-snoring device or a last resort. For appropriately selected patients, particularly those with mild to moderate OSA, MAD therapy can significantly reduce breathing events and snoring while improving sleep quality and daytime symptoms. Because the appliance is custom-made, quiet, compact, mask-free, and easy to travel with, many patients find it easier to incorporate into their nightly routine. The best treatment is therefore the one that is clinically appropriate, objectively verified, and consistently used.
